There are often occurrences where families make the retirement decisions, and a lot of the time it is not fun for them or the retiree, especially when no one can come to a mutual agreement.

What should you look out for if you would like to stay in control of your retirement? There is no one size fits all, so here is some important advice about planning your retirement…

- If possible, visit the establishment beforehand and have lunch there. Most retirement communities offer 16 meals from the communal kitchen (Pinelands Grove also boasts an all day long coffee shop). Don’t wait until you arrive to find out the quality of the food you’ll be eating.

- Even though very few of us will ever use a frail care, make sure there is a high quality one in the retirement home or village, and you have a preferential access arrangement – even if it’s just for recuperative care.

- The agent should be able to describe, and show you the security system – does it monitor all entrances and is there 24 hour manned security?

- What if I live on my own and get sick? Is there an emergency medical service and/or care packages and does it cost extra?

- Retirement homes are factually smaller than the spacious life you and your partner have enjoyed whilst you were bringing up the children. The question is not the size, but what is the feeling you get when visiting the community establishment? Is it an environment where you can enjoy yourself and entertain friends if you’d like?

Tick these boxes and chances are you’ll have a happy, well-planned retirement.
